It is the largest and one of the biggest ancient Stupa in the world revered by both Tibetan and Newar Buddhist alike. Having all-seeing eyes of Lord Buddha it is 36 m high and was built in the 5th century on an octagonal base inset with Prayer wheels. At the ground level there is a brick wall with 147 niches and 108 images of Lord Buddha in meditation mood. Tibetans believe that the Stupa contains the bone relics of the past Kashyapa. Early morning and evening are the times to visit Bouddhanath to join the local residents in Kora (walking the pilgrim’s circuit, sometimes with Tibetan pilgrims on their hands and knees).
